Breastfeeding and Obesity

Overweight and obesity are at epidemic proportions. Both conditions complicate pregnancy, childbirth, and lactation. This presentation looks at the evidence for the protective effects of breastfeeding upon the development of overweight and obesity, especially in infancy and childhood. Also covered is how obesity affects lactation and the possible complications to breastfeeding that overweight and obesity present. Interventions for remediating these problems are offered.

Examining Over-Abundant Milk Supply
Time: 3:50 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.Description:
This session will examine variations in mothers' experiences of the milk ejection reflex including strong or painful, over-active, and depression associated [D-MER] let-downs. Over abundance of milk will also be explored as it can affect the infant's ability to cope with fast milk flow, possible fast infant weight gain and stool variations, and the mother's comfort and breast health.
Tongue Tie: A Personal Journey

Join a discussion about one case of tongue tie that led to a Failure To Thrive risk and supplementation in the child of a LLL Leader. Find out what happened medically and why it took so long to get a correct diagnosis as well as the techniques used to keep the baby (now a toddler) at the breast. Knowing this personal journey will help you to help other moms in the same situation.
Positive Discipline for Pre-Schoolers

We will discuss how to use methods to raise a child who is responsible, respectful, and resourceful. Avoid power struggles, enlist cooperation, and understand the development of these bright, intense little people. This session uses Jane Nelsen's "Positive Discipline" series as it's primary source.
